WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?
Our waste problem is seemingly insurmountable. Enough plastic is thrown away each year to circle the earth four times. As the Plastic Pollution Coalition reminds us: Plastic never goes away. It spoils our groundwater, attracts other pollutants, threatens wildlife, affects human health, poisons our food chain and costs billions to abate. And plastics account for just 10% of the waste we generate.
Our reliance on short-life products has piled up into a mountainous, long-term problem.
But we have the power to move mountains.
So many of the products we use were designed for one single purpose or another – but we don’t have to accept this. That’s why we’re teaming up with Travel Well Magazine and the Plastic Pollution Coalition on the #Repurposely 30-Day DIY Challenge!
WHAT TO DO?
Fall is the perfect season to intentionally find second and third lives through intentional repurposing in creative, do-it-yourself projects. Turn a cardboard box into a train costume, plastic bottles into skull lights or witch’s broom, milk jugs into ghosts, or countless other Halloween projects that are fun for the whole family. For more grown up crafts, turn bottles into apothecary wares, get ahead on holiday gifts with homemade candles or recipes packaged in old jars, turn old paint chips into a dry erase calendar, or redecorate with handmade statement pieces just in time for Thanksgiving. The opportunities are endless when you refuse to accept refuse.
THE PRIZE
As an added bonus, getting repurposely crafty won’t just make your house, wallet and planet happy, it will give you a chance at winning an awesome prize! One lucky winner will receive an amazing plastic-free travel set of our products in a limited edition #repurposely canvas carrying case. Take a look at the handy mix of travel items you could win here… wooden comb, charcoal water purifier, mini shaving brush, safety razor, soap box, toothbrush, glass straw, collapsible mug, stainless steel spork!
HOW TO ENTER
Entering is simple: Find one way to repurpose something destined for a landfill – or left astray in the ecosystem as litter – as many days out of the 30-day challenge as possible. Every time you purposefully upcycle something between October 18 and November 17 at 11:55PM EST, snap a photo and share it on Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram using the hashtag #Repurposely and tagging Travel Well Magazine (@travelwellmag on Twitter and Instagram.) They’ll repost your crafty entries to share the #repurposely love!
Each upcycled item or craft can earn up to three entries (one each on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram), but there is no limit to the number of items you can upcycle and enter. The more you enter, the better your chances of winning! On November 18, qualifying entries will be tallied, and the winner will be announced via the Travel Well Facebook page, so be sure to like the page and follow us there.
Note: We’re on the honor system here, so please be true and honest to yourself and your fellow challengers. If you don’t complete the challenge for a given day, do not post that you did, but do make a promise to yourself to do better the next day!
